DETOUR BY TEILO WESSELLS

Teilo Wessells is a fine art photographer and recent graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He received the Imre J. Molnar Artistic Achievement Award in acknowledgment of his thesis portfolio and publication, both entitled Pulse. Wessells employs compressed, design focused compositions to explore the ephemeral characteristics of organic and inorganic structures, which are always in flux. He has also been experimenting with his own unique processes and techniques toward fashion portraiture, combining his interests in fine art and commercial photography. Wessells is continuing to sharpen his skills by assisting photographers like Jenny Risher and exhibiting his work locally and internationally.

“Hitting the gas seems to be the hardest part for some reason- a hesitation on the pedal. I couldn’t be in a better spot to leave. Everything is telling me it’s a good idea, just drive for a while, find a road that takes me somewhere else. It’s not too late yet, but I can’t help but feel it looming. I must be scared. I’m gonna fly.”

Teilo Wessells’ “Detour” navigates the dichotomous relationships of grime and grace. The remnants of human presence as organic material in geometric spaces finds solace in the absence of full human presence. There is romanticization of the dirty, the habitual vices, and questionable decisions. On a journey from day to night, Wessells visual road trip takes us through pit stop perspectives and evolution of light in the quiet companionship of those we trust.
